RESUMO

The Trans-Atlantic Research and Development Interchange on Sustainability Workshop (TARDIS) is a meeting on scientific topics related to sustainability. The 2019 workshop theme was "On the Role of Uncertainty in Managing the Earth for Global Sustainability." This paper presents the perspectives on this topic derived from talks and discussions at the 2019 TARDIS workshop. There are four kinds of uncertainties encountered in sustainability ranging from clear enough futures to true surprises. The current state-of-the-art in assessing and mitigating these uncertainties is discussed.

RESUMO

Beef neckbones were processed through a traditional Advanced Meat Recovery system (TAMR), a Desinewated Minced Meat machine with/without prior use of Jarvis saw for removal of spinal cord (DMMJ/DMMNJ), or hand boned with/without Jarvis saw (HJ/HNJ). This study investigated the composition of meat recovered by these five methods. Ranking from the most to least total fat percentage was TAMR (22.02%), HNJ (18.37%), HJ (14.69%), DMMNJ (11.14%), and DMMJ (9.76%); higher fat was related to less moisture. Protein was most for HJ (18.32%) and least for TAMR (15.79%). TAMR and HJ were similar (P>0.05) in ash content. Calcium was most in DMMJ (79.81mg); the least was found in the hand boned (HJ, 20.86mg/100g and HNJ, 23.66mg) lean. All samples contained calcium below the required limits set by USDA-FSIS. Total iron was the highest in TAMR (5.28mg of iron/100g), followed by DMMJ (3.65mg), DMMNJ (3.46mg), HJ (2.77mg), and HNJ (2.18mg).

RESUMO

Due to environmental constraints and reactive water management practices, water shortages exist across the Everglades ecosystem. A growing human population and continued wetlands damage and loss decrease the system's ability to provide water for sustained natural areas and for human uses. 'The Restudy' is an $8 billion plan to restore the Everglades while also continuing to provide water storage for urban and agricultural areas. The Restudy proposes a mix of water storage systems to provide for the predicted future growth in water demand. This mix is purported to be the most cost-efficient at providing water supplies, within the constraints of unchanged agricultural and urban land use. However, a sensitivity analysis of the Restudy's cost equation reveals that the total cost of water storage systems is influenced by real estate, land acquisition and water treatment costs. The interaction of land use and agricultural policies can affect these cost factors, and can change the relative cost-efficiency between storage systems. Real estate and land acquisition costs are affected by several 1996 Farm Bill provisions, which influence the cost of aboveground water storage systems versus Aquifer Storage and Recovery systems. The Governor's Commission for a Sustainable South Florida recommendations also influence the water storage options available to the Restudy. Due to the Restudy's initial assumptions and constraints, it may not advocate the most economically and ecologically sound remediation.

RESUMO

Tropical rainforests exhibit an extraordinarily high level of biological diversity. A new study shows that the patterns of seedling survival surrounding parent trees are responsible in large part for this amazing diversity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study assesses whether oral multiple-dose charcoal therapy (MDC) or whole-bowel irrigation (WBI) enhances the excretion of previously absorbed salicylate. METHODS: A controlled, randomized, three-limbed crossover protocol was used in nine humans who ingested aspirin. Salicylate levels were measured in serial serum specimens and 32-hour urine collections and kinetic parameters were calculated. RESULTS: There were no differences among the control (CTL), MDC, or WBI groups for area under the serum concentration vs time curve (CTL, 2320 +/- 501 mg/L.h MDC, 2040 +/- 454 mg/L.h; WBI, 2093 +/- 418 mg/L.h) or for urinary salicylates (CTL, 54.9% +/- 9.4%; MDC, 50.9% +/- 8.0%, WBI, 52.4% +/- 13.7% of ingested dose). CONCLUSIONS: Our data do not support the use of either MDC or WBI to enhance the excretion of previously absorbed salicylate in poisoned patients. In patients with drug overdoses, a clear rectal effluent remains as the endpoint for WBI.

RESUMO

Serum levels of total and specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) have been determined by radioimmunoassays in sixty-nine allergic subjects. The forty-one subjects with mild symptoms were the most difficult to diagnose, since nine had IgE levels less than 50 U/ml and nineteen had no detectable specific IgE antibodies. Samples of nasal secretions were collected from these nineteen subjects and five were found to have specific IgE antibodies, and in a further eight increased amounts of total IgE. The possibility of locally produced IgE antibodies should therefore be considered when using in vitro tests to diagnose mild or recently acquired allergies, especially when serum IgE levels are less than 50 U/ml.
